The Iglesia Adventista del Septimo Día’s story in Honduras is remarkable. It began with Elizabeth Gauterau. In 1887 Elizabeth returned to the Bay Islands after discovering her faith. She shared books and magazines. Soon a dozen islanders embraced her beliefs.

In 1891 Pastor Francisco J Hutchins and his wife Cora arrived. They established their base in Roatán. They spread literature from Belize to Colón. Others accepted the Adventist message. This happened in Utila and Guanaja. The Adventist faith grew rapidly. A building intended for another church became an Adventist one.

The first Central American camp meeting took place in 1908. It was held in Coxen Hole. Believers came from Belize and Honduras. They arrived from Utila Roatán and Guanaja. Important decisions were made. These decisions helped the work progress.

In 1915 a significant meeting occurred in La Ceiba. The Adventist message had spread among English speakers. There was a need to reach the Spanish-speaking population. A resolution was passed. It required leaders to learn Spanish. This would help them connect better.

In 1918 Honduras and British Honduras formed the Honduras Adventist Mission. This mission had 267 members. The headquarters moved to San Pedro Sula. Later it moved to Tegucigalpa.

A fire in 1949 threatened the church. But the prayers of the members were answered. The wind changed direction. The Iglesia Adventista del Septimo Día was saved. People saw this as a sign of God’s favor.

Between 1953 and 1958 the mission offices moved to Tegucigalpa. In 1988 the Mission of the Bay Islands was reorganized. This marked a new chapter. In 1998 the Mission of Northwestern Honduras was established.

In 2011 the Honduran Union was formed. It emerged from the Central American Central Union. Today the Iglesia Adventista del Septimo Día in Honduras has 428 churches. It has 255151 members.
