A fifteen-meter-long whale skeleton greets you. Welcome to the Museo de Historia Natural in Tegucigalpa. This isn’t just any museum. It’s a treasure trove of Honduras’ natural history. It’s the only one of its kind in the entire country.

The Museo de Historia Natural opened its doors in 1977. It started small. It began as the Flora and Fauna Project. It housed modest collections of Honduran flora and fauna. Over the years it grew. It expanded significantly in 1993. Today it stands as a testament to the rich biodiversity of Honduras.

Step inside. You’ll find more than eight thousand organisms. They represent millions of years of evolution. There are three main sections. There’s the exhibition collection the scientific collection and a live collection. The live collection includes snakes. The scientific collection houses specimens not open to the public. This includes mammals birds amphibians reptiles and bats. You can see complete skeletons of oropendolas chorchas and zanates. Some are even posed in scientific positions.

Among the fascinating exhibits are fossils. Some are fossilized tree trunks. They are millions of years old. You’ll also find fossils of rhinoceroses elephants camels and horses. These animals roamed Honduras during the Miocene epoch. That was over 23 million years ago.

Explore the fossils from the extinct Esquías Sea. This sea once covered several Honduran departments. The museum showcases a gray whale skeleton. It’s a striking symbol of the museum. This magnificent whale arrived in the 1940s from the Gulf of Fonseca. There’s even a crocodile. It was recovered from the Choluteca River under the Mallol Bridge. And don’t miss the tiger Sultan. His skeleton is a testament to the museum’s dedication to preserving Honduras’ natural heritage. This majestic feline was donated by the Rossy Walter Zoo.

A new organism species for Honduras was even discovered in collaboration with Guatemala in 2020.
