What if I told you that this building, right here, ISTABA, is more than just a mosque? It’s a testament to the growing Muslim community in Tampa Bay. Founded in 1973 as a humble place of worship, ISTABA, the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay Area, has blossomed into a vibrant hub, reflecting the evolving needs of its people. Imagine the echoing calls to prayer five times a day, the warmth of community during Ramadan gatherings, the joy of children playing on the grounds after Saturday school. This is ISTABA, a place where faith intertwines with daily life. ISTABA isn’t just about prayers, it’s about education. The Saturday school, established to teach young Muslims about their heritage, thrives, nurturing minds from ages 5 to 18. Alongside Islamic studies and Arabic, the Quran’s teachings resonate within these walls. It also houses the Hifz Academy, blending Islamic and academic learning, much like a Catholic school. But ISTABA’s heart extends beyond its walls. The food pantry, established in 2000, stands as a testament to its commitment to the wider community. During Hurricane Irma in 2017, ISTABA opened its doors as a refuge, partnering with CAIR to provide shelter and support to those in need, regardless of faith. Even when the pandemic forced its physical closure, ISTABA’s spirit remained undeterred. Sermons found new life on YouTube, community discussions thrived on Zoom, proving that faith transcends physical limitations. ISTABA is a testament to resilience, a beacon of hope, a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of faith, community, and compassion.
