The congregation initially met in a simple structure made of driftwood at Fort Brooke. They called it the Church by the Sea. A quaint name for a humble beginning. This temporary home served the community for quite some time before they built their first actual church building in 1853. This was an important milestone. It became Tampa’s second public building. The county courthouse was the first. This early building which was fondly nicknamed the “Little White Church” hosted diverse religious groups.
