“Little Church in the Grove.” That’s what Saint Marys Catholic Church was once known as. Imagine this place surrounded by orange trees. It is quite a different picture from what we see today.
Welcome to Saint Marys Catholic Church in Tampa. This church has a rich history and a vibrant community. It is a place where faith and fellowship intertwine.
Saint Marys Catholic Church was established in January 1966. Father James Larkin was its first pastor. In the early days, the congregation met in an unlikely place. It was Gordon Seeley’s Restaurant at Florida and Nebraska avenues. Imagine celebrating Mass surrounded by restaurant booths.
The growing congregation needed more space. They moved to Mort Elementary School. Finally, the present church was dedicated on May 23, 1968. Father Larkin, who later became the bishop of St. Petersburg in 1979, led the dedication.
Father Simeon Gardner became pastor in 1983. He was a scholar with a doctorate in theology. He taught for 18 years before serving at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Parish. Before Tampa he also served in Fort Myers and Sarasota.
Saint Marys Catholic Church offers many services. Weekend Masses are held at various times. There are services at 5:00 pm. There are also services at 8:00 am, 10:00 am, and 12:00 pm. A Spanish Mass is held at Santa Maria Mission.
Confession is available on Saturdays from 4:00 pm to 4:40 pm. Adoration takes place on weekday mornings. There is also a Holy Hour with Adoration and Benediction.
The church is committed to spiritual growth. Its mission includes perpetuating faith. Saint Marys Catholic Church fosters fellowship. It provides opportunities for everyone to participate. Liturgical social and outreach ministries are available.

Saint Marys Catholic Church actively reaches out to the community. They participate in Meals on Wheels. They also support Scout troops and host Bloodmobile events. Vacation Bible School is also provided. The parish collects food monthly for Day Star in Ybor City. This food is then distributed to the poor.
