Founded in 1870 as Brush Harbor Mission by Reverend Thomas Warren Long this church embodies the spirit of those who sought refuge and unity. Long journeyed 50 miles through swamps and forests to establish this vital spiritual center. It wasn’t easy.

Initially called Mount Moriah A.M.E. Church it moved to its current location. It wasn’t always on Harrison Avenue. Hurricanes destroyed early structures. The name changed to Saint Paul A.M.E. Church. This reflects the enduring faith of its congregants.

Completed in 1913 the Gothic Revival-style church was more than just a place of worship. It was a hub of social activity a safe haven. During segregation it provided solace and community for Black residents of Tampa. Sunday services were celebrations. They included Bible study and potlucks.

Saint Paul A.M.E. Church became a prominent center for Black politics and civil rights. Its pulpit hosted notable figures. Paul Robeson Jesse Jackson President Clinton and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall all graced its stage. They shared their messages of hope and change. These visits cemented the church’s place in Tampa history.

The church played a pivotal role in the education of Black children in Tampa. It helped fund the Harlem Academy School. This school was the first public school for Black children. When the school burned down classes were temporarily held at the church.

While the congregation moved to a smaller facility the original building remains. It is now a 15000 square foot life center. It contains affordable housing a computer lab a fitness center and a children’s play area. The restored stained glass windows are a vibrant reminder of the church’s past. They fulfill the city’s public art requirements. The windows are more than art. They are a testament to the church’s enduring legacy. The story of Saint Paul A.M.E. Church continues to inspire and uplift.
