Did you know that Jefferson High School wasn’t always on West Cypress Street? Jefferson High School stands proudly today a testament to Tampa’s educational growth. But its story began much earlier. In 1939 due to a surge in high school students Jefferson High School opened. Its first home was the Old Hillsborough County High School building. That building on North Highland Avenue served as the school’s initial location. The school was named after the third president Thomas Jefferson. Its first principal was D W Waters. The first graduating class celebrated their achievement in 1942. However times changed. By 1967 the school’s original building no longer met modern educational standards. Jefferson High School closed its doors. Students transferred to neighboring schools to continue their education. That original building still stands today though transformed. It now serves as the D W Waters Career Center. Then on August 27 1973 Jefferson High School reopened. This time it found its current home on West Cypress Street. It’s been there ever since. This new location marked a significant turning point. This new Jefferson High School thrived. It expanded its offerings and became a hub for the community. It wasn’t always just about academics either. Jefferson High School boasts a rich athletic history. Its football team the Dragons achieved remarkable success. In 2010 they won the Class 3A State Championship. This victory capped off an undefeated season. They finished with an impressive 15-0 record. The team even earned a national ranking at number eight. The school’s impressive alumni network spans various fields. From professional athletes like Tony La Russa a Baseball Hall of Famer to actors musicians and politicians. Jefferson High School played a crucial role in shaping these individuals’ lives. It is a source of great pride for Tampa. Today Jefferson High School continues its legacy of academic and athletic excellence. Its impressive magnet programs draw students from across the city.
