Picture this You are standing at the entrance to Edge of Africa at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. A recreated African fishing village surrounds you. The air hums with the sounds of exotic birds. The scent of unfamiliar plants fills your nostrils.

Edge of Africa opened on July 4 1997. It’s a 15-acre walk-through safari. The exhibit showcases various African species up close. It’s a major project that took years to develop. It wasn’t a response to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Instead it was created because guests wanted closer animal encounters.

Imagine walking along the paths. You might see lions lazily lounging. Or perhaps a family of hippos cooling off in their pool. Meerkats dart about their enclosure. A Nile crocodile waits patiently in its habitat. You may even spot elusive lemurs swinging through the trees. The exhibit also includes hyenas and African crested porcupines. Other animals such as Thomson’s gazelle and grey crowned cranes also reside here. Lesser flamingos and African fowl once called Edge of Africa home but have since moved on. The same is true for spur winged geese.

Over the years Edge of Africa has undergone changes. In 2010 a new pathway opened near the lion and hyena habitats. In 2012 sections of the exhibit closed for over a month for repairs. The hippo and Nile crocodile habitats needed resealing. Thousands of fish were even temporarily moved to SeaWorld Orlando. In 2015 a section was demolished to make way for a new attraction. However the heart of Edge of Africa remains a unique and immersive experience. You can get up close to amazing creatures. The area also offers several vantage points looking out onto the Serengeti Plain.

The animals here are not just on display. They receive special enrichment. Carved pumpkins are provided around Halloween. Keepers are present for special talks. They offer an insight into the lives of these animals.

Edge of Africa is more than just a zoo exhibit. It’s a journey. It allows you to connect with the wonders of Africa. The exhibit is a testament to Busch Gardens dedication to wildlife conservation. It also showcases the park’s commitment to creating memorable experiences for its guests. Enjoy your journey into the heart of Africa.
