Karl saw a vacant 28-story building a modern skyscraper. He negotiated a bargain basement price thirty million dollars. This was far less than its value. The County Commission approved the purchase. By 1994 the Frederick B. Karl County Center was fully occupied. County operations were finally under one roof.

The building’s name honors Karl’s dedication to public service. He championed important projects. He oversaw the creation of a health plan for the needy. He also pushed for the construction of Amalie Arena and George M. Steinbrenner Field. The center’s construction was a landmark achievement.
