As vibrant as the market surrounding it, Jingmei Jiying Temple stands as a testament to centuries of faith and migration. Right before you, nestled within the bustling heart of Jingmei Night Market, this temple isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a living history of the Jingmei community.

Built in 1860, Jingmei Jiying Temple was originally a much smaller structure in Zhuwei. It was later moved to its present location in 1867. This makes it one of the oldest temples in Taipei, its story deeply intertwined with the development of the surrounding area. Jiying Temple is dedicated to Baoyi Zunwang, also known as the Loyal Pair, brought to Taiwan by immigrants from Anxi County in China over 400 years ago.

These immigrants, primarily from the Kao, Chang, and Lin clans, sought a new life in Taiwan, bringing with them their customs and beliefs. They carried statues of their deities, including Baoyi Zunwang, believing in their protection and guidance as they navigated the challenges of a new land. This temple, established by the Kao clan, served as a vital spiritual anchor for these early settlers, a place of solace and community in an unfamiliar world.

Look around you – the temple’s architecture reflects their dedication. It features elaborate stone engravings, wooden window frames, and a traditional layout of two halls, two hallways, and two side wings. These intricate details whisper tales of skilled craftsmanship and a reverence for tradition. Jingmei Jiying Temple has witnessed countless prayers, festivals, and community gatherings, its very foundation echoing with the hopes and dreams of generations past. The next time you wander through the lively stalls of Jingmei Night Market, take a moment to step inside Jingmei Jiying Temple.
