Is this really the only surviving wooden Xieshan-style temple in all of Taipei? Welcome to the Xi’ande Temple. This temple is also called the Assistance General Xie’an Temple. It stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of early settlers in Taiwan. The temple was built in 1862 and is dedicated to the deity Assistance General Xie’an. He was a military official from Quanzhou during the Ming Dynasty. He is revered by believers as a deity who oversees military affairs and maritime safety.
The Xi’ande Temple, originally a two-hall structure, sadly lost its front hall due to road widening. Today, only the main hall, constructed in the impressive Xieshan style, remains. This unique architectural style, once common, is now a rarity in Taipei. The Xi’ande temple shares this distinction with only a handful of other structures, such as the Dalongdong Baoan Temple.
What sets the Xi’ande Temple apart is its history. It was established during the Qing Dynasty by immigrants hailing from Quanzhou, who sought to establish a place of worship in their new homeland. The temple’s founding coincided with a turbulent period in Taiwan’s history and provided solace and unity to the community amidst political unrest. In the early 20th century, the temple underwent significant renovations. These renovations were led by renowned master carpenters, Wang Yi-Shun and Chen Ying-Bin. These renovations not only preserved the temple but also enhanced its architectural splendor.
The annual festival of the Assistance General Xie’an Temple, held on the 1st of October of the lunar calendar, is a vibrant celebration. It is a time when locals gather to pay their respects and seek blessings. This festival serves as a testament to the temple’s enduring importance to the local community.
