How often do you encounter a university that has a twin with a slightly different name across the strait? This is Soochow University, a renowned private institution with a fascinating history. Soochow University’s story begins not here in Taipei but in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Founded in 1900, the original Soochow University was a pioneer, the first western-style university in China. After the Chinese Civil War, dedicated alumni who had fled to Taiwan dreamt of reviving their beloved institution. In 1951, their dream took root in rented premises on Hankou Street in Taipei. This marked the beginning of what we now know as Soochow University. It began humbly as the Soochow Preparatory School. In 1954, with government approval, the School of Law was established, making it Taiwan’s first private university. Over the decades, Soochow University blossomed, adding colleges and departments. Soochow University now boasts six colleges with over 15,000 students. It has consistently been recognized for its commitment to academic excellence. The university has received the Ministry of Education’s “Teaching Excellence Program” award for eleven consecutive years. Today, Soochow University stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders. It’s a place where the pursuit of knowledge and personal growth are paramount.
