“A small cabinet, old and seemingly insignificant…” That’s how the TAI Herbarium at National Taiwan University might appear at first glance. But don’t let that fool you! This unassuming building, established in 1927, holds a treasure trove of botanical wonders. Within its walls, you’ll find a fascinating journey through Taiwan’s ecological history. Inside the TAI Herbarium, time seems to stand still. Antique furniture and historical specimens create an atmosphere of nostalgia. Look for the humble-looking cabinets donated by Professor Chang-Fu Hsieh. These once belonged to Professor Shinichi Hibino during the Japanese colonial period, representing the Herbarium’s enduring legacy. The TAI Herbarium isn’t just about dusty specimens. It houses a diverse collection, from colorful seed displays to freeze-dried plants and samples of fruit and wood. Each item in this small exhibition hall carries decades of historical significance. Don’t miss the Special Exhibition Room, dedicated to the legacy of Yushun Kudo, the Herbarium’s first curator. His personal collections and research manuscripts offer a glimpse into the early days of botanical exploration in Taiwan. The TAI Herbarium provides a captivating journey into the world of plants and their significance in our lives.
