The cornerstone a silent testament to faith. This is the Paróquia Sant’Ana. Its story unfolds before you a tapestry woven with devotion and resilience.

Paróquia Sant’Ana wasn’t built in a day. It stands on land once occupied by a Jesuit chapel. That chapel’s history stretches back centuries. After the Jesuits’ expulsion the building served various purposes a residence for government advisors a seminary a smallpox hospital. Even a tramway workshop called it home for a while. By 1894 it was a federal troops’ barracks. Its walls have witnessed so much.

The Paróquia Sant’Ana’s official birth is marked by a decree. On July 12 1895 Dom Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcante signed the document. It declared the new parish splitting it from Santa Ifigênia Church. The decree was read on July 21. A celebration for Sant’Ana followed on July 26 at the Santa Cruz Chapel. This served as a temporary home for the parish.

The area covered by the new parish was enormous. It stretched from the Tietê River all the way to Guarulhos. It’s hard to imagine that now! Early priests were mostly missionaries from Nossa Senhora da Salete. They laid the foundation for the community’s enduring faith.

Construction of the current church started in 1906. It was the seventh vicar Father Clemente Moussier who began the work. The First World War halted construction in 1914. Six years later Father Fidelis Willi resumed it. Father André Duguet and Father Francisco Amos Connor added towers and completed the interior. The main altar was also modified during their terms.

Father Connor a remarkable man served for 20 years. He was also a psychiatrist offering support particularly to young people. A street in Tremembé bears his name a testament to his influence. Other priests associated with Paróquia Sant’Ana also have streets named after them.

Sculptor Artur Pederzoli left his mark on the Paróquia Sant’Ana. He created the Sant’Ana image the Senhor dos Passos and the Via Sacra. Born in Modena Italy he was a talented artist. Some of his works are displayed internationally including a statue in Vatican City.

Paróquia Sant’Ana’s history intertwines with the Santana neighborhood and the Episcopal Region Santana. It reflects the enduring faith of the people. The church continues to serve its community with various social services. Its history resonates with the very fabric of São Paulo. It remains a beacon of faith a symbol of resilience. Its doors are open to all.
