What if these walls could talk? The Capistrano de Abreu State School has a story etched into its very foundation. Let’s explore the history of this Guarulhos landmark.

The Capistrano de Abreu State School began as the Grupo Escolar Guarulhos. It was founded in 1926. The school was on the corner of Rua Luiz Faccini and Rua Siqueira Campos. Back then, it was the city’s main school. Children came from all over Guarulhos to study here.

In 1935, the school moved to its current location on Rua Capitão Gabriel. The building was constructed in a colonial style. Twelve years later, in 1947, it was renamed Capistrano de Abreu State School.

But why Capistrano de Abreu? João Capistrano de Abreu was a historian. He was born in Maranguape, Ceará. He was known for his innovative research methods. Capistrano challenged established historical interpretations. He even stood up to Emperor Dom Pedro II. Capistrano asserted his intellectual superiority during an examination. The emperor was so taken aback that he postponed the session.

The Capistrano de Abreu State School’s origins go back even further. In 1913, a group of prominent Guarulhos citizens sent a request to Captain Gabriel José Antônio. He was the mayor at the time. They wanted land to build a school. The goal was to bring together schools that were in poor condition. These schools were scattered across Vila Galvão, Ponte Grande, and other areas.

The state education department approved the request. This led to the opening of the Grupo Escolar de Guarulhos in 1926. The Capistrano de Abreu State School has been recognized for its historical importance. It was declared a historical landmark in 2000. This designation safeguards its unique architecture.

Today, the Capistrano de Abreu State School continues its mission. It provides education to the students of Guarulhos. The school has a director, Genilson Nardy, and a vice-director, Deborah de Cassia Oliveira Ferrao. Luiza Helena Roque is the coordinator.

The Capistrano de Abreu State School also uses modern tools. There are 68 computers for the students. Teachers like Angelica Martins and Pedro de Alcantara da Silva Costa use technology in the classroom. They use the Proatec program. This program supports technology and innovation.

The Capistrano de Abreu State School is more than just a building. It is a living testament to Guarulhos’ commitment to education. From its humble beginnings to its current role, it continues to shape young minds. The Capistrano de Abreu State School stands as a proud symbol of the city’s rich history.
