“A Polish architect’s vision” That’s how I’d describe the Basílica Nossa Senhora do Carmo.

Welcome friends to this magnificent basilica. It’s a Neo-Romanesque masterpiece. It stands proudly in São Paulo. Its history is rich and captivating. Architect Georg Przyrembel designed this beauty. He cleverly incorporated sacred works from the old Carmo church. These include two altars and window parapets. The stunning paintings are the work of Tullio Mugnaini. Carlos Oswald created the moving Via Sacra.

The Basílica Nossa Senhora do Carmo opened its doors on Easter Sunday April 1 1934. Archbishop Dom Duarte Leopoldo e Silva blessed the basilica. In 1940 it became a parish. Frei Batista Blenke served as its first vicar. A significant moment arrived on December 10 1949. Bishop Dom Eliseu van de Weijer consecrated the church. The Basílica Nossa Senhora do Carmo received a great honor. Pope Pius XII elevated it to a minor basilica on May 13 1950.

The basilica’s organ is another story. Built in Germany in 1934 by E P Walker it initially had two keyboards and 2206 pipes. Pedro Inglada expanded it in 1955. The expanded organ boasts three manuals and a pedal board. It now features a magnificent 9660 pipes. Ricardo Clerice oversaw a complete restoration in 1981. The sound is breathtaking.

The Basílica Nossa Senhora do Carmo is more than a building. It’s a testament to faith art and history. It’s a place of solace and worship. It’s a place where generations have found peace.
