“A gift forged in bronze and granite,” a voice whispers, “a testament to friendship and gratitude.” We stand before the Monumento Amizade Sírio Libanesa, a towering sculpture that speaks volumes about São Paulo’s rich history. The monument, a gift from the Syrian-Lebanese community, commemorates Brazil’s Centennial Independence in 1922. Ettore Ximenez, the artist behind the iconic Independence Monument in Ipiranga, also crafted this masterpiece. Originally placed near the Palace of Industries (now the Catavento Museum), the Monumento Amizade Sírio Libanesa was later moved to Praça Ragueb Chohfi. This move aimed to protect it from vandalism, a sad irony given its current state. The monument stands over thirteen meters tall, including its pink granite pedestal. The bronze sculpture depicts a rich tapestry of symbolic figures. Atop, a woman represents the Brazilian Republic. A native Brazilian warrior stands beside her, receiving an offering from a Syrian woman. Below, a Phoenician ship symbolizes commerce, a nod to the entrepreneurial spirit of these immigrant communities. Other figures represent the discovery of the Canary Islands and the introduction of the Arabic alphabet. The monument’s lower section depicts the arrival of Arabs in Brazil, capturing a pivotal moment in the nation’s diverse history. Sadly, the Monumento Amizade Sírio Libanesa has suffered from neglect and vandalism. Parts of the sculpture have been stolen. Even the bronze plaques, inscribed with messages in Portuguese and Arabic, have been taken. The remaining marble plaque, installed by Mayor Jânio Quadros in 1988, is barely legible due to wear and grime. Despite its condition, the monument holds a powerful message. It’s a reminder of the contributions of the Syrian-Lebanese community to São Paulo’s vibrant cultural tapestry. It also serves as a poignant symbol of the ongoing struggle to preserve our shared history.
