Didn’t someone say that knowledge is power? Here at FFLCH – Sociais e Filosofia that saying comes to life. This faculty stands as a vibrant hub for those seeking to understand the human condition. It is a place where ideas clash and merge shaping perspectives that influence Brazil and beyond.
FFLCH – Sociais e Filosofia is part of the Universidade de São Paulo USP. It is a place of teaching research and outreach. The faculty focuses on philosophy history geography literature and social sciences. It holds the distinction of being the largest unit within USP regarding student numbers. Here at FFLCH a diverse range of courses is available for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
Its history began in 1934 with the founding of the Faculdade de Filosofia. At that time it was Ciências e Letras FFCL. The goal was to centralize activities at the newly created Universidade de São Paulo. It aimed to cultivate a core of Brazilian researchers across various fields. Early years were interdisciplinary. It offered courses from sciences to humanities. European professors played a key role since Brazil lacked local expertise. Figures like Claude Lévi-Strauss and Fernand Braudel contributed. The initial aim was to train specialized teachers for secondary and higher education.
As USP expanded many FFCL departments gained independence. For example the institutes of physics and mathematics became separate entities. In the 1960s FFCL was located on Rua Maria Antônia. It became a hotbed for student political and intellectual movements. This was in opposition to the military regime. Many professors were forced into retirement. Some had to leave the country.
The proximity of FFCL to Universidade Mackenzie led to conflict. Differing political views clashed openly. FFCL was largely left-leaning while Mackenzie had right-wing students. Tensions escalated resulting in violence. This event hastened the faculty’s relocation. The military regime moved it to the Cidade Universitária.
In 2002 a student strike took place. It was led by students from theLetras course. They demanded more teachers due to overcrowded classrooms. Some teachers were handling classes of 200 students. The strike lasted 104 days. Eventually an agreement was reached to hire more professors.
Several FFLCH professors have held prominent government positions. Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Florestan Fernandes were members of the constituent assembly. Cardoso also served as Minister and President of Brazil. Marilena Chauí was Secretary of Culture for São Paulo. Francisco Weffort became Minister of Culture.
FFLCH boasts a long list of distinguished faculty and alumni. They include Alfredo Bosi Antonio Candido and many others. These individuals have significantly contributed to Brazilian thought. The legacy of FFLCH continues to shape intellectual and political discourse in Brazil.
Today FFLCH – Sociais e Filosofia publishes over forty journals. These publications cover diverse fields from anthropology to sociology. They showcase the ongoing research and intellectual output of the faculty. As we stand here it is clear FFLCH is more than just a collection of buildings. It is a living testament to the power of education.
