Feel the cool smoothness of the marble beneath your fingertips. This is the Marco Zero of Sao Paulo. A seemingly unassuming hexagonal prism it holds the heart of this bustling metropolis.

In 1934 this milestone was placed here in front of Sao Paulo Cathedral on Praca da Se. It symbolizes the city’s geographic center. More than that though it’s a critical reference point. Street numbers radiate outwards from this very spot.

Its creation wasn’t a simple undertaking. Journalist Americo Netto first proposed the idea in 1921. He saw the chaos caused by Sao Paulo’s multiple unofficial zero points. His pleas for clarity were published in the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper and Boas Estradas magazine. Netto championed this single point of reference. He envisioned a monument similar to Washington DC’s Zero Milestone and Ancient Rome’s Milliarium Aureum.

Mayor Antonio Carlos de Assumpcao finally adopted Netto’s vision in 1932. The design was entrusted to the talented French artist Jean Gabriel Villin. The resulting sculpture is a marvel. It’s carved from marble rests on a granite pedestal. A bronze plate crowns the structure.

Each face of the Marco Zero is inscribed with the name of a neighboring state. These are accompanied by evocative images. Rio de Janeiro is represented by Sugarloaf Mountain. Santos shows a ship symbolizing its vital port. Minas Gerais is depicted with mining tools reflecting its rich mineral heritage. These symbolic engravings connect Sao Paulo to its surroundings.

The top bronze plate shows a map of Sao Paulo. Key landmarks are marked. Avenida Paulista the Tiete River and Luz Station are all featured. This miniature map gives a snapshot of the city’s layout in 1934.

Since its installation in 1934 the Marco Zero has been the official starting point. It’s the reference for roads highways rail lines and even telephone lines. The city’s growth and evolution spread outward from this point. Its preservation was recognized in 2007. The Municipal Council for the Preservation of Historical Cultural and Environmental Patrimony of the City of Sao Paulo officially protected it.

So stand here before the Marco Zero. Feel the weight of history under your feet. Consider the vision of a journalist his determination to bring order to chaos. And remember the artistic skill that resulted in this enduring symbol of Sao Paulo. Its unassuming form belies its significance. This modest monument anchors the sprawling city.
