A forgotten military secret whispers from the waters of Rantumbecken. Before you lies a vast expanse of calm water. This seemingly tranquil scene hides a fascinating history. Rantumbecken is not a natural lagoon. It was created during the Nazi era. In 1936 the Wehrmacht built a five-kilometer-long dike. This separated a 576-hectare area from the Wadden Sea. The plan was to create a seaplane base. This would provide a consistent water level for their aircraft. The rough North Sea and tidal changes made landing difficult. Two pumping stations were integrated into the dike. These were intended to maintain the water level suitable for operations. However the Rantumbecken was deemed unnecessary. The German invasion of Denmark in 1940 offered better airfields. Technological advancements also made seaplanes obsolete. The Dornier Wal was no longer a strategic asset. The seaplane base project became insignificant. After World War II there were plans to drain the basin. They wanted to create farmland with four agricultural businesses.

Instead Westerland’s wastewater was diverted into Rantumbecken. Starting in 1962 extensive renaturation efforts began. A large seabird sanctuary was established. It became a European nature reserve in 1968. Over time a diverse ecosystem developed. This included meadows swamps and aquatic and sandy areas. The Rantumbecken is now a thriving wetland habitat. It supports a variety of plant and animal life. Imagine the transformation from a failed military project to a vital natural environment.

Today Rantumbecken is a protected area. This is thanks to the efforts of the Jordsand association. They manage and protect this valuable ecosystem. Many bird species thrive here. Thousands of birds use it during migration. This makes Rantumbecken a prime location for birdwatching. The area offers walking paths and cycling routes along the dike. Be aware of grazing sheep. You might encounter these gentle creatures during your journey. They are a charming addition to the landscape. A walk around Rantumbecken offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue. It’s a reminder of how human intentions can be redirected towards conservation. The Rantumbecken’s story is a testament to nature’s resilience. This is a place where history and nature intertwine. Rantumbecken is a place of peace and quiet beauty. But it also stands as a reminder of a past that is both impressive and grim. Enjoy the peaceful nature reserve that was almost a war base. Remember Rantumbecken’s unusual history.
