“A lighthouse that moved? You’re having me on, right?” a skeptical voice might question. You might think it’s a tall tale, but the Ehemaliges Hörnumer Leuchtfeuer has indeed embarked on a journey, albeit a landlocked one. This beacon, originally standing sentinel on the Hörnum Odde, roughly 800 meters south of the Hörnum Lighthouse, isn’t your typical maritime monument. This Ehemaliges Hörnumer Leuchtfeuer, less known to the casual lighthouse enthusiast, played a crucial role in guiding ships safely through the treacherous Vortrapptief, a shallow area off the southern tip of Sylt. From 1907 to 1995, it served as a front light in a directional range, working in conjunction with the Hörnum Odde lower light, established in 1907, to illuminate a safe passage. However, as shipping routes evolved and the need for the directional range diminished, the lower light was extinguished in 1995. But the story of the Ehemaliges Hörnumer Leuchtfeuer doesn’t end there. After facing severe sand erosion from powerful storms in 2013, the tower was dismantled. Instead of meeting its demise, the community of Hörnum rallied, raising funds to purchase the tower from the Water and Shipping Authority. In a heartwarming display of local pride, the Ehemaliges Hörnumer Leuchtfeuer was resurrected in January 2018, finding a new home in a charming park on Rantumer Strasse. Today, no longer a guardian of the sea, it stands as a testament to the resilience of the community and the captivating allure of lighthouses, even those that have found landlegs.
