Step onto the grassy ground and you’ll find yourself before the Denghoog, a remarkable passage grave dating back around 3000 BC on the northern edge of Wenningstedt-Braderup. This ancient monument, rising 3.5 meters high, has witnessed the passage of millennia on Sylt. It is a testament to the skill of the Neolithic people who built this impressive structure on top of a pre-existing passage grave. Its design is a fascinating blend of practicality and reverence for the dead, with the ellipsoid chamber, 5 meters by 3 meters, holding the memories of those interred within. The chamber is the heart of this monument. Its roof is supported by twelve enormous boulders, each weighing an impressive 20 metric tons. The spaces between these boulders are meticulously filled with dry stone walls, forming a remarkably strong and waterproof roof. The chamber is accessed by a six-meter-long passage, lined with granite and gneiss, that leads into the heart of this ancient monument. This remarkable structure is a reminder of the rich past of Sylt, a place where the past meets the present, offering a captivating glimpse into the lives and rituals of our ancestors.
