Designed by Joseph Fowell and Kenneth McConnel its construction spanned decades from 1934 to 1964. Initially only half the budget was available. The southern section was completed first. Father Patrick Cunningham later spearheaded a fundraising effort. This secured the funds to finish the northern section including the sanctuary sacristies and altar. In 1964 Archbishop Norman Thomas Cardinal Gilroy blessed the completed Shrine of Saint Anne Catholic Church.

The foundations are made of sandstone. It came from a local quarry in Clyde Street North Bondi. The church’s sandstone features are striking. They contrast beautifully with the rich red brickwork. The details are exquisite. Notice the gargoyles supporting saints and the angels above the portico windows. These were crafted from green bricks then fired and carefully placed. Even the bricks were hand-brushed. University students reportedly lent a hand.

The Shrine of Saint Anne Catholic Church is more than just a pretty building. It won the prestigious Sir John Sulman Medal in 1935. This was a significant honor. It was the first church to receive this award. The church’s design is a fascinating blend of styles. It’s described as Inter-War Romanesque.
