What if a prison looked so inviting that you’d mistake it for a luxurious hotel? You might be surprised to learn that this is the reality of Swakopmund Prison! Swakopmund Prison, affectionately called the “Old Prison”, doesn’t fit the stereotypical image of a dreary, intimidating penitentiary. Built in 1909 by the German Empire, this structure might fool you with its charming facade, resembling a stately lodge more than a place of confinement. Designed by German architect Heinrich Bause, Swakopmund Prison boasts a captivating German colonial style. It’s said that during an official visit, a distinguished guest remarked, “I wouldn’t mind staying there!”, only to be humorously informed that he was actually admiring the town prison! Initially, this unique building housed prison staff and administrative offices, while the prisoners were kept in separate quarters. In 1991, Swakopmund Prison underwent a significant restoration, preserving its historical integrity and architectural beauty. It’s a remarkable testament to its enduring construction that this captivating structure, despite its age, continues to serve its original purpose, reminding us of Swakopmund’s intriguing past.
