Established in 1818, the University of Hohenheim stands as Stuttgart’s oldest university. It began not as a center for theoretical studies but as a practical solution to a kingdom-wide crisis.

King William I of Württemberg founded the Agricultural Academy in Hohenheim. This was his response to the devastating famine caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora. His goal was simple. He wanted to improve general nutrition through teaching, experimentation, and practical demonstration.

Initially, the University of Hohenheim had just 18 students and three professors. Its home was Hohenheim Palace built by Charles Eugene Duke of Württemberg. Johann Nepomuk Schwerz became the academy’s first director.

Over time, the Agricultural Academy evolved. In 1847, it gained the rank of an “Academy of Agriculture and Forestry.” By 1904, it was known as “Agricultural College”. The right to confer doctorates came in 1918. Habilitations followed in 1919.

A significant moment arrived in 1923. Margarete von Wrangell was appointed to the chair for plant nutrition. She became the first female full professor at a German university.

The dark shadow of national socialism fell upon the University of Hohenheim. The university was forced to close in 1945. But the buildings survived World War II relatively unscathed.

The University of Hohenheim reopened in 1946. New faculties emerged. Agricultural Sciences and Natural Sciences arrived in 1964. Business, Economics, and Social Sciences followed in 1968. The University of Hohenheim achieved full university status in 1967.

Today, the University of Hohenheim is home to around 9,000 students. The teaching staff numbers approximately 900. Over 2,000 people work here.
