A mere stump remains. Yet this solitary pillar whispers tales of the Hasenbergturm. Imagine its former glory a 36-meter-high tower crafted from red sandstone. This wasn’t just any tower. The Hasenbergturm was Stuttgart’s first ever observation tower. Built in 1879 by the Verschönerungsverein Stuttgart its inauguration was a true folk festival. People celebrated the magnificent views. They could see the Swabian Alb the Black Forest and the Odenwald.

The Hasenbergturm wasn’t just a beautiful structure. It was a symbol of Stuttgart. Its location was perfect. The Hasenberg offered easy access via the Hasenbergsteige an ancient trail. The nearby Gäubahn Stuttgart’s panoramic railway further increased its popularity. For decades the tower and its Jägerhaus a popular inn were beloved destinations. The tower generated substantial income for the Verschönerungsverein through entrance fees.

But the Hasenbergturm’s story took a tragic turn. During World War II it was mistakenly believed to be a landmark for enemy bombers. In March 1943 the SS ordered its destruction. The tower was blown up. Only its base survived. A senseless act of wartime folly. The Verschönerungsverein later sought compensation to rebuild. They were unsuccessful. The city did agree to pay compensation for lost entrance fees.

Today the Hasenbergturm’s ruin stands as a reminder. A stark warning against the senselessness of war. A poignant tribute to a lost piece of Stuttgart’s history. The Hasenberganlage surrounding the stump remains a beautiful park. It has a Wilhelm Hauff monument and sculptures by Otto Herbert Hajek. This is a space for reflection. A place where the story of the Hasenbergturm lives on. While rebuilding the tower has been ruled out the ruin remains a powerful symbol. It represents Stuttgart’s resilience and its enduring spirit. It is a testament to the past a quiet observer of the city’s ever-changing present. Visit the Hasenbergturm’s ruin. Let its presence speak to you. Reflect on its past. Appreciate the present.
