Question: What does a Roman goddess, a villa, and a cultural association have in common? They all relate to the Pallas-Athene-Brunnen.
Welcome to the Pallas-Athene-Brunnen. It is a beautiful fountain. It bears the name of the Greek goddess Athena. You can find it along Jean-Amery-Weg near Karlshöhe. Karl Donndorf created it in 1911. The Pallas-Athene-Brunnen is culturally and historically important. It has been fully operational since 2011.
The Pallas-Athene-Brunnen once belonged to the park of Gustav Siegle’s villa. He was an industrialist. His widow, Julie, commissioned Karl Donndorf to build the fountain in a neoclassical style. It was on the northern slope of Karlshöhe. The villa was at the foot of Karlshöhe. The family’s summer house, Sonnenschlösschen, was at the top.
During World War II, the park suffered much damage. The villa was destroyed in 1944. Its ruins were demolished in 1953. The summer house was also demolished in 1961. It was replaced by a viewing terrace with a bar. The Pallas-Athene-Brunnen fell into disrepair too.
In 1989, the Verschönerungsverein Stuttgart restored the fountain’s basins and figures. This cultural association owns a large part of Karlshöhe. For the 150th anniversary in 2011, the association restored the statues of Athena, Pandora, Prometheus, and the head of Zeus. They also restored the fountain system.
In the center of the neoclassical fountain is a statue of Athena. It shows the moment of her birth. According to Greek mythology, she emerged from the head of her father Zeus fully armed. The stone statue of Athena wears a metal shield, spear, armor, and helmet. Only the head of Zeus appears. It serves as a pedestal for Athena’s statue.
Below Athena and Zeus’s head are two well basins like a staircase. Next to the lower basin is the stone figure of Prometheus. He is on Athena’s right. On her left is Pandora with her famous box.
The choice of Athena reflects how the Siegle family saw themselves. Athena is the protector of Athens. She is also the goddess of wisdom and the patroness of arts and sciences. Gustav and Julie Siegle supported cultural, social, and scientific causes. They funded the first hospital in Feuerbach in 1893. They also funded the Gustav-Siegle-Haus in Stuttgart in 1912. It was used for popular education.
The fountain system symbolizes the dual value of human striving for knowledge. Prometheus brought fire to men. Zeus cruelly punished him for it. Pandora brought all evils to humanity. She only left hope.
Karl Donndorf created another work in Stuttgart in 1914. It also showed the ambivalence of good and bad. It was the Schicksalsbrunnen or Fountain of Destiny. It features the Goddess of Fate. On the left is the statue of pain. On the right is the statue of joy and love.
The Pallas-Athene-Brunnen stands as a testament to history. It reminds us of the Siegle family’s legacy. It also shows the importance of art and culture in Stuttgart. It is a beautifully restored monument. It embodies wisdom, knowledge, and the human condition’s complexities.
