Did you know St Maria in Stuttgart is the oldest of three parishes in Stuttgart Sud? This magnificent church stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of a community. Its imposing neo-Gothic architecture dominates the Tübinger Straße. Construction began in 1871. It was completed eight years later. King Karl himself attended the consecration in 1879. This was a momentous occasion. It marked the first Catholic church built in Stuttgart after the Reformation.

Before St Maria’s construction the Catholic community was small. Only 140 Catholics lived in Stuttgart in 1807. By 1880 their numbers swelled to over 14000. St Maria became a beacon a welcoming home for this growing population. Many newcomers found solace and community within its walls. The church’s full name Visitation of Mary is a powerful symbol. It commemorates Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth. This emphasizes the importance of human connection both within and beyond the parish.

The church’s design is breathtaking. Architect Joseph Egle drew inspiration from the Liebfrauenkirche in Trier and the Elisabethkirche in Marburg. The result is a three-nave hall church. It boasts a transept and three choirs. It stretches 54 meters long and 33 meters wide. Two majestic towers rise almost 60 meters piercing the Stuttgart sky. Sadly World War II inflicted devastating damage. The vault collapsed leaving only the towers standing. Despite the destruction the congregation’s unwavering spirit shone through. They rebuilt St Maria. A wooden ceiling replaced the collapsed vault. Christmas 1949 saw the first service back in the restored church.

Today St Maria is more than a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub for cultural events. It hosts readings workshops and community gatherings. It reflects the modern needs of its diverse congregation. The church also houses remarkable artwork. Gothic pieces on loan from the Württemberg State Museum adorn the interior. These include a crucifixion group a crucifix and a Madonna with Child. Stained glass windows by Otto Habel a member of the congregation further enhance its beauty. St Maria continues to thrive a testament to its rich history its resilient community and its ongoing dedication to faith and fellowship. It’s a true gem a must-see landmark of Stuttgart.
