Picture a romantic castle, reduced to its most charming essence. That’s the Kriegsbergturm. Here, atop the Kriegsberg hill, we find ourselves before a monument. It offers more than just a view. It provides a glimpse into Stuttgart’s past. The Kriegsbergturm stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to beauty and preservation.

The Kriegsberg Tower was built in 1895. Carl Weigle, a “Baurat” or building official, designed it. The Verschönerungsverein Stuttgart, or Stuttgart Enhancement Society, commissioned it. This society aimed to beautify the city. They sought to create spaces for public enjoyment.

Standing at just under 10 meters tall, the Kriegsbergturm is not imposing. Yet, its location on the 353-meter-high Kriegsberg offers a stunning panorama. The tower is made of sandstone. It features a viewing platform with a merlon-shaped parapet. An open hall is attached, completing the design. The design evokes a Romanesque castle.

From here, the view extends across Stuttgart’s city center. The Schurwald forest is visible. The Rems and Neckar valleys stretch out before us. The Kriegsbergturm provides a perfect vantage point. It allows us to appreciate the natural beauty surrounding Stuttgart.

The Kriegsbergturm was not always in pristine condition. By 1966, the tower had fallen into disrepair. It was even considered for demolition. However, its status as a protected monument saved it. From 1983 to 1995, the tower underwent extensive restoration. Stuttgart citizens, the city itself, and the Baden-Württemberg State Office for Monuments contributed. The restoration cost 120,000 DM. Another renovation took place in 2017–2018. These efforts ensured the Kriegsbergturm would endure.

The Verschönerungsverein Stuttgart played a vital role. They initiated the tower’s construction and oversaw its restoration. This organization was founded in 1861. It has consistently worked to enhance Stuttgart’s appeal. The Kriegsbergturm is one of their proudest achievements.

In January 2019, the Kriegsbergturm received special recognition. The Baden-Württemberg Monument Foundation named it “Monument of the Month”. This honor highlights the tower’s cultural and historical significance.

Today, the Kriegsbergturm remains a beloved landmark. It is only open on special occasions. When open, it offers a unique experience. The Kriegsbergturm connects us to Stuttgart’s history. It reminds us of the importance of preserving our heritage. The tower embodies the spirit of the Verschönerungsverein Stuttgart. It is a symbol of community pride and dedication to beauty. As we stand here, let’s appreciate the vision that created this charming tower. Let’s also acknowledge the efforts that have preserved it for generations to come.
