The Schellenturm is more than just an old tower. It is a reminder of Stuttgart’s history. Built in 1564, it was originally known as the Kastkellereiturm. This translates to the tower of the state winery. It served as a storage place for wine and grain. These supplies were for the court and government officials.
Later the tower became known as the Schellenturm. This name comes from the “Schellenwerker”. These were prisoners who had committed minor offenses. They were put to work on public projects. To make sure everyone knew their status, they wore bells on their clothing. Imagine the constant jingling as they worked. They likely helped to build and maintain the very tower that carries their name.
The Schellenturm faced neglect and damage over the years. In 1906, during a renovation, the upper part was found to be crumbling. It was replaced with a lighter timber-framed structure. Then, in 1944, bombs destroyed the Schellenturm. Only the base remained.
After the war, there was debate about rebuilding the Schellenturm. Some wanted to tear it down completely. Others saw it as an important piece of Stuttgart’s past. Thankfully, Gustav Wais, a champion for historical preservation, fought to save what was left.
Finally, in 1961, the stump of the Schellenturm was secured. In 1977, a group of citizens formed a foundation. They raised money to rebuild the tower. In 1980, the Weinstube Schellenturm opened its doors.
Today the Schellenturm houses a cozy restaurant. The Weinstube Schellenturm offers visitors a warm refuge. You can enjoy fine cuisine and traditional dishes. The stone walls and timber frame create a welcoming atmosphere.
But there is one more quirky story to tell. In 1997, the Schellenturm was at the center of a political scandal. A finance ministry official allegedly leaked information. This was during a meeting at the Weinstube. This “Stammtisch Affair” caused quite a stir.
