Hidden beneath the streets of Strasbourg lies a secret. A secret whispered through centuries a testament to a community’s enduring faith. This is the Musée du Bain Rituel Juif.

The Musée du Bain Rituel Juif isn’t just a museum. It’s a portal to the past. It’s a window into the heart of Strasbourg’s medieval Jewish community. Before you stands a unique structure. This is the only remaining medieval Jewish edifice in Strasbourg. Imagine the lives lived the rituals performed within these very walls.

Its discovery was unexpected. In 1984 renovations began on a building at 20 rue des Charpentiers. This building had housed the Istra printing company. The planned demolition caused concern. The Société d’Histoire des Israélites d’Alsace et de Lorraine knew something special was here. They alerted the Minister of Culture Jack Lang.

A six-month archaeological dig followed. The dig unearthed a square room about three meters to a side. The room had a barrel vault. At each corner sat puzzling Romanesque corbels. Their presence is architecturally inexplicable.

Layers of history were revealed. First a packed earth floor then a brick pavement. Below lay another layer of bricks and stone slabs. Then the diggers found a filled-in well. This well was off-center from the vault’s opening. This added to the mystery.

The well was carefully removed. The dig continued. They unearthed the remains of a staircase. This staircase led from the cave’s floor down to the water table. Parts of it were reused when the well was built. The staircase shows the mikveh’s original purpose.

The staircase ended at a basin. A wooden structure surrounded the basin. It measured 1.7 meters by 1.5 meters. This structure was probably retaining formwork. It dates back to the 11th or 12th century. The basin itself held at least 500 liters. The water came from the groundwater. Rainwater could also have been used.

The Musée du Bain Rituel Juif is more than stones and earth. It’s a story of resilience. It’s a story of a community’s unwavering spirit. A spirit that endured persecution and displacement. It is a reminder of Strasbourg’s rich and complex past. A past that deserves to be remembered and understood. This remarkable site offers a glimpse into a lost world. A world revived through meticulous archaeological work. Take your time explore its secrets. Let the story of the Musée du Bain Rituel Juif resonate within you.
