Picture this. You stand before Villa Ostlerloff a stunning blend of medieval and Renaissance styles. It’s the sole survivor of a once grand collection of picturesque villas surrounding Contades Park.

This magnificent Villa Ostlerloff holds a captivating history. Built between 1901 and 1902 it was originally commissioned by Otto Gunderloch a prominent entrepreneur. Architect Albert Nadler masterminded its design. The villa later took the name of architect Waldemar Osterloff who acquired it in 1929.

The building plans from the Building Police files are in poor condition. The facade plans overlooking Contades Park and the Ill River are only photocopies. Imagine the challenges faced by those restoring the villa.

Villa Ostlerloff underwent significant restoration in 1993. Architect Nicolas Berst oversaw the project. The renovation included replacing the roof dormers with Velux windows. New rolling shutters were added. These were specifically required to be painted a dark rosewood or walnut hue.

In 2009-2010 entrepreneur Joel Apolloni bought Villa Ostlerloff. He undertook extensive interior and exterior renovations. He carefully preserved the villa’s original character. The garden was meticulously landscaped and now includes nighttime illumination. Apolloni renamed the villa Le Manoir du Contades. Following the renovations he planned to rent out this beautiful home. While awaiting a tenant he hosted an art exhibition. Seventeen artists showcased their sculptures and paintings throughout the villa.

Villa Ostlerloff’s history is rich and layered. Each renovation reflects the changing tastes and priorities of its owners. Yet its unique architectural charm has endured. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Strasbourg’s architectural heritage. Villa Ostlerloff is not just a building it is a living story. A story we’ve just begun to explore.
