Do you hear the echoes of a community’s dream? This is the story of the Paroisse protestante de la Meinau-Canardiere-Hohwart. It stands as a testament to faith and collective effort.
The story of this church begins with the people of Meinau. They were tired of traveling miles to Neudorf or Neuhof for church services. These dedicated individuals decided to take matters into their own hands. They organized sales and put forward their own money. Their goal was to establish a place of worship closer to home.
Finally, their vision became a reality. On September 4, 1955, the Protestant community of Meinau celebrated the inauguration of their new church. This was a momentous occasion for the rapidly growing neighborhood. The church became a focal point for the community.
Before the church was built, the Protestant community held services in a classroom. This makeshift arrangement started in 1948. In 1953, the city of Strasbourg provided land in Meinau. The Neudorf parish could then construct a dedicated church building.
In 1965, the church achieved autonomy. It became its own independent parish. This marked a significant step in the church’s development. The Paroisse protestante de la Meinau-Canardiere-Hohwart was now fully responsible for its own affairs.
Later, in 1973, construction began on a parish center. It was located at the corner of Rue de Bourgogne and Rue de la Canardiere. This addition provided space for various church activities and gatherings.
The Paroisse protestante de la Meinau-Canardiere-Hohwart also has ties to the EHPAD Le Kachelofe. This retirement home was founded by the parish. It opened in 1991. Though now autonomous, half the board members are still appointed by the church council. The Kachelofe’s function rooms, kitchen and chapel are available to the parish for its activities.
A senior residence opened in 2021. The pastor provides pastoral care to the residents. She also conducts services there.
In 2002, the church acquired a new organ. Georges Frederic Walther built it. The organ incorporates elements from the Sacre-Coeur church.
In 2014, the parish gained a wonderful parish hall next to the church. An association was founded. It manages the hall and makes it available for events.
The Paroisse protestante de la Meinau-Canardiere-Hohwart stands as a symbol. It represents the enduring spirit of community and faith. It began with a simple desire for a local place to worship.
