Is it merely a bridge or a symbol of unity? The Pont de l’Europe stands before us. It connects Strasbourg and Kehl. More importantly, it bridges France and Germany.

The Pont de l’Europe is more than just concrete and steel. It represents reconciliation. After the Second World War, this bridge symbolized peace. It signified a new era of Franco-German cooperation.

Let’s step back in time. Before this bridge, a different one stood here since 1897. But war is a cruel architect. French troops destroyed it during the war. Later, German forces erected a temporary structure. This makeshift bridge lasted until it too was damaged.

The current Pont de l’Europe opened in 1960. Its name signifies the return of peace. The bridge’s construction features two piles. These are connected by a vaulted deck. The deck stretches 245.4 meters. With lateral pillars included, the total length reaches 122.7 meters.

Imagine the traffic. Around 130,000 vehicles cross this bridge daily. It is the busiest border crossing between France and Germany. The Pont de l’Europe facilitates not only cars but also pedestrians and cyclists.

Before 2004, it was the only Rhine crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. The Passerelle des Deux Rives has since provided another option.

The bridge’s height is modest. It rises 4.9 meters above the pillars. Its abutment measures 2.5 meters. The structure rests on two large steel caissons. These caissons are arranged around a 9.15-meter wheelbase.

Consider the river level. During high water, a clearance of only 7.2 meters remains. This requires careful monitoring.

The Pont de l’Europe is part of a larger network. It connects Route Nationale 4 in France to Bundesstrasse 28 in Germany.

Despite its age, the Pont de l’Europe remains vital. It stands as a testament to enduring peace. It shows cooperation between nations. As you cross this bridge, remember its history. Remember its symbolism. The Pont de l’Europe is more than a crossing. It is a landmark of unity.
