In 1972, the Opéra du Rhin was formed. Alain Lombard led the merger. The Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg and the Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse became key players. Lombard brought in stars such as Birgit Nilsson and José Carreras.

The Ballet Du Rhin has been based in Mulhouse since 1985. It is a national center for choreography. The Opéra Studio in Colmar trains young singers.

The Opéra du Rhin has seen many leaders. René Terrasson succeeded Lombard. Later directors included Laurent Spielmann, Rudolf Berger, and Nicholas Snowman. Since 2020, Alain Perroux has been at the helm.
