Have you ever walked on an island in the heart of a city? Welcome to the Grande Ile in Strasbourg a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. This isn’t just any island. It’s the historic center of Strasbourg. The Grande Ile means ‘Large Island’. It’s surrounded by the Ill River and the Canal du Faux-Rempart.

These include the Palais Rohan the Hôtel de Hanau (now City Hall) and the Hôtel des Deux-Ponts. The Hôtel des Deux-Ponts is where Ludwig I of Bavaria was born. It’s now the city’s military governor’s residence. Other impressive buildings include the Hôtel de Klinglin the Hôtel d’Andlau-Klinglin and the Hôtel de Neuwiller. The Episcopal palace of the Archdiocese of Strasbourg is also located here.

To celebrate its World Heritage status 22 brass plates were placed on the bridges leading to the island. Each one a testament to the Grande Ile’s enduring importance.
