Have you ever heard of a soldier who died fighting for his beliefs? Right in front of you stands the Schill-Denkmal. It commemorates the Prussian officer Ferdinand von Schill. He was a controversial figure, known for his daring exploits and his opposition to Napoleon. He died here in Stralsund during a battle against the French. The monument was inaugurated in 1909, on the 100th anniversary of Schill’s death. It’s a bronze statue, sculpted by Hans Weddo von Glümer. Schill is depicted standing proud, his sword raised in the air. The monument is a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom. The inscription on its base reads “Dem Andenken | Ferdinand’s v. Schill | und seiner Waffengefaehrten”. But did you know that Schill’s head was sent to King Jerome, Napoleon’s brother, after his death? King Jerome was the King of Westphalia at the time. It’s a chilling reminder of the brutality of war.
