Have you ever wondered where Swedish money comes from? Well, you’re standing before it! You’re in front of Sveriges Riksbank, Sweden’s central bank. This modernistic building, with its sleek, black facade and eight levels towering above us, is the heart of Sweden’s financial system. It may not look like much from the outside, but inside, decisions are made that influence the whole country’s economy.

The Riksbank has a long history, dating back to 1668, making it the world’s oldest surviving central bank. This place was once a private bank, founded by Johan Palmstruch, but when the bank issued too many notes without proper backing, it went bankrupt. Palmstruch was condemned to death, but lucky for him, he received a pardon. The bank was then taken over by the parliament and renamed Riksens Ständers Bank, before getting its current name, Sveriges Riksbank, in 1866. Today, the Riksbank is responsible for managing the Swedish currency, the krona, and setting interest rates. It’s an incredibly important institution for the Swedish society, shaping the country’s financial future.

The Riksbank is known for pioneering innovative monetary policies, like negative interest rates. In 2009, it became the first central bank to implement a negative interest rate, lowering it to -0.25%. This was a bold move meant to stimulate the economy during a period of financial crisis. And, it’s this dedication to innovation that cemented the Riksbank’s place as a pioneer among central banks, constantly seeking new ways to manage the Swedish economy effectively.
