A simple wooden cross stands tall, surrounded by smaller monuments, each with a story to tell. This is Kaknäs djurkyrkogård, an oasis of poignant memories nestled in the heart of Stockholm. It’s the oldest active animal cemetery in Sweden, a place where beloved pets have found their eternal rest.

The first grave dates back to 1870, belonging to Nero, the dog of the writer August Blanche. It is said that after the Blanche family moved, Nero’s remains were transferred to this serene graveyard. As the years passed, Kaknäs djurkyrkogård became Stockholm’s designated final resting place for their precious companions.

In the 1940s, the cemetery officially ceased to exist, but the love for these animals never faded. People continued to bury their pets here, including Don Juan, a circus horse featured in Ingmar Bergman’s film, The Seventh Seal, shot in 1957.

After a period of neglect, the cemetery was restored to its former glory in the early 1990s thanks to the work of the cemetery superintendent. And since then, the tradition of providing a final resting place for cherished companions has resumed.

Walk amongst the manicured graves, each with its unique inscription and ornaments. These gentle tributes speak volumes about the love and devotion shared between animals and their humans. It’s a place where memories are cherished, and where the bond between a person and their pet lives on.
