Seven years after his first visit, Prince Eugen purchased this property. He commissioned Ferdinand Boberg to design a new house. Boberg also designed Rosenbad. It now houses the Prime Minister’s office. Construction took place from 1903 to 1904.
After Prince Eugen’s death, Waldemarsudde was transformed into a museum. It showcases his own paintings and those of other artists. The prince passed away in 1947. He is buried on these grounds near the beach.
Waldemarsudde is named for its location. Waldemar is an Old German noble name. Udde means cape. The name comes from Djurgården’s historical name, Valmundsö.
The museum complex has several buildings. The Mansion was completed in 1905. The Gallery Building was added in 1913. Both were designed by Ferdinand Boberg. There is also the Old House. It dates back to the 1780s. An old linseed oil mill is also part of the estate.
The parkland surrounding Waldemarsudde is beautiful. It features old oak trees. These reflect Prince Eugen’s love for gardening. The Art Nouveau interior is stunning. Boberg designed it in a Gustavian style. The design makes use of the panoramic views of Stockholm. The elevated location provides beautiful light.
Prince Eugen studied art in Paris. He became a patron of Nordic and French art. Waldemarsudde displays works by famous artists. These include Edvard Munch and Auguste Rodin. You can also find pieces by Ernst Josephson and Anders Zorn. Isaac Grünewald and Sigrid Hjertén are also represented.
Prince Eugen bequeathed Waldemarsudde to the Swedish state. He also left his art collection. The museum opened to the public in 1948. Today, it is a popular art museum.
