Could stones speak? At Lovö kyrka, they whisper tales of centuries past. This unassuming church, nestled on Lovön island, has witnessed the ebb and flow of history since the 12th century. Lovö kyrka isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith and the passage of time.

Lovö kyrka likely started as a smaller structure in the 1100s, possibly even predating a wooden church. Its early connection to Eds kyrka is evident in its original design. Both shared the unique feature of an apse directly attached to the nave. Lovö kyrka’s tower, still standing proud, and half of the present nave are remnants of this original construction. Later, in the late 1200s, the church expanded eastward. It transitioned into the rectangular shape we see today, becoming what is known as a “hall church.” Three tall, narrow windows, added on the south side, likely accompanied this extension. Around the same time, a barrel-vaulted sacristy was also added.

The church continued to evolve. In the early 1400s, arches were built over the nave, and the windows were modified, showcasing the evolving architectural styles. A stone porch appeared on the south side, offering shelter to worshippers. A fire in 1603 necessitated the replacement of the medieval arches with a flat ceiling, later replaced by a barrel vault in the late 1600s. The eastern part of the nave received a plastered wooden barrel vault in the 1670s. The present chancel, possibly designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, also emerged during this period as a tomb for Field Marshal Lorens von der Linde. It served the dual purpose of a tomb and the church’s high altar, symbolizing the intersection of life and death.

Inside Lovö kyrka, treasures await. A 13th-century baptismal font stands as a silent witness to countless christenings. The pulpit, crafted in 1718, possibly in Burchard Precht’s workshop, has echoed with sermons for generations. A baptismal basin, graced by an angel above, dates back to 1700. The altarpiece, painted by Carl Gustaf Plagemann in 1866, was a gift from two sisters residing in Drottningholm. The church houses a fascinating collection of around thirty gravestones. Many belong to individuals connected to Drottningholm Palace, their stories intertwined with the royal residence. Even the runestones, originally part of the church’s foundation, now stand as sentinels in front of the church, marking the transition to Christianity in the 11th century. Lovö kyrka is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a vessel filled with stories, waiting to be discovered.
