While its architectural style might remind you of grand, towering structures, Engelbrekt Church stands at an impressive, but perhaps less imposing than you imagine, 73 meters tall. Don’t let that fool you though, Engelbrekt Church, completed in 1914, still holds the title of having the highest nave in all of Scandinavia! The church, designed by Lars Israel Wahlman, is a stunning example of the Swedish Art Nouveau era and the National Romantic style. Its design, largely untouched since its inauguration, draws inspiration from Byzantine architecture, evident in its cruciform plan and intricate details. Interestingly, Engelbrekt Church isn’t just a beautiful building. It carries a significant name, honoring Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson, a 15th-century Swedish rebel leader who fought against the Kalmar Union. Just like Engelbrekt himself, the church stands as a symbol of resistance and national pride.
