Picture this. You are standing before St John’s Church in Stockholm. Its majestic brick facade rises before you a testament to Gothic Revival architecture.

St John’s Church a Norrmalm landmark boasts a rich history. Construction began not in 1890 as many believe but in 1884. Carl Mu00f6ller’s design won a competition. His vision transformed the site. This replaced an earlier wooden chapel built in 1651. That small chapel had ambitious plans for a stone church. Those plans were delayed. Eventually King Gustav III approved a new church in the 1770s. Architect Jean Eric Rehn was chosen. His classical design however was deemed old-fashioned by the King. Construction was halted. A new design by French architect Lu00e9on Dufourny was proposed. It was rejected. The wooden chapel was expanded instead. Finally in the late 19th century plans for a new stone church were revived.

The church’s construction was completed in 1890. Its consecration on Pentecost Sunday was a grand event. King Oskar II himself attended the ceremony. Archbishop Anton Niklas Sundberg officiated. The brick church stands proudly. It has stood the test of time. The intricate details are still visible. The copper roof shines. Many have sought refuge and spiritual solace within these walls.

For many years St John’s Church was a Church of Sweden parish. In a surprising turn of events the Church of Sweden announced in December 2024 that the parish would be sold. The Catholic Diocese of Stockholm took over in 2025. St John’s Church now stands as the fourth Catholic church in Stockholm.

St John’s Church continues to serve the community. It is a place of worship. It is a cultural landmark. It’s a reminder of history’s twists and turns. A testament to faith perseverance and architectural beauty. This is St John’s Church a significant part of Stockholm’s rich tapestry.
