You might be surprised to learn that Freemans, a quaint village on the island of Antigua, boasts a unique claim to fame: it’s the island’s most central village. Well, at least according to the locals, who consider this undeniable. As you stand here at the eastern entrance, you can see the welcoming sign proudly proclaiming, “The Most Central Village in The Island.” The story goes like this: after the abolition of slavery in 1834, former slaves embraced their freedom and settled in this area. The pride they felt in their newfound independence manifested in the village’s name, Freemans, though it was initially called Francibell. Perhaps the most fascinating fact about Freemans is that over 30 settlements flourished in Antigua following the abolition of slavery. These settlements were established by former slaves who refused to remain on the plantations, seeking independence and better bargaining power for their labor. And who knows, perhaps those date palms lining the path you see were brought here with camels! Freeman, a plantation owner, introduced camels to his estate to work the fields. Date palms were transported along with these camels to provide them with a food source. The camels though, struggled to adapt to Antigua’s humid climate and many succumbed to foot problems, but the date palms survived. The climate of Antigua however, doesn’t allow the palms to produce the plump, sweet dates you might be used to seeing in other parts of the world. The village has also seen a fascinating mix of religions – from Adventists to Moravians, Freemans has embraced diversity and faith. And then there’s the story of the centenarians – the sign you see here proudly declares, “Freeman’s Village has produced five (5) centenarians, two of whom are a father and his son.” One of these centenarians, Anderson O’Marde, a local historian, has documented these amazing stories, breathing life into the past.  You can truly feel the spirit of resilience and empowerment in this place. It’s more than just a village; it’s a testament to the resilience and spirit of those who dared to dream of freedom.
