Established in 1952 Korea Aerospace University started as a national school. It was initially called the Civilian Aviation Training Center. Its primary goal was training pilots and aviation technicians. This was vital for South Korea’s growing aviation industry. The Korean War impacted its early years. The university’s charter was granted by the Ministry of Transportation. It began as a two-year school. It only had three departments. These were Flight Operation Aircraft Power and Telecommunication Engineering.
After the war the university moved to Seoul. Then in 1963 it moved to its current location in Goyang City. New buildings were constructed including a hangar a flight training center and an electronics and telecommunications building. Other crucial additions included a central library a maintenance factory a wireless lab and the Aviation Research Institute. A training school for aviation technology also opened.
In 1979 Korea Aerospace University transitioned to a private university. The Jungseok Foundation took over. This foundation was established by the Hanjin Group. The university expanded significantly adding schools departments and graduate programs. Supporting organizations and institutes were also reorganized. More buildings were added in the 1970s and 1990s. These included a Liberal Arts Building an expanded Central Library an Aviation Control Center and several engineering buildings. A student hall was also constructed.
Korea Aerospace University continued to grow and develop in the 2000s. The university focused on internal stability. Key developments included an expanded Central Library. A Center for Technical Assistance to Small and Medium-sized Industries was created. So was the KAU Aerospace Center Museum and a new administrative building. The university achieved a major milestone in 2006. It launched the CubeSat microsatellite. This was a first for Korean universities.
The university also made significant advances in unmanned aerial vehicles UAV research. Korea Aerospace University achieved the first autonomous formation flight of a UAV in Korea. They also achieved the first solar-powered UAV flight lasting 12 continuous hours. In 2007 the university rebranded itself. It changed its name from Hankuk Aviation University to Korea Aerospace University. It strengthened its international partnerships. It received AABI Aviation Accreditation Board International certification in various areas. It signed many MOUs and cooperation agreements with leading international institutions. Korea Aerospace University also signed a joint development agreement with General Electric.
Today Korea Aerospace University remains a leader in aerospace education and research. It offers many undergraduate graduate and doctoral programs. These cover various aspects of aerospace engineering aviation management and air transportation. The university’s strong industry connections give students practical experience. This is through internships research opportunities and partnerships with major companies. Korea Aerospace University continues to grow and shape the future of aerospace.
