Listen closely for a tale of melodies. A story that resonates through time at the Museum of Gugak. The Museum of Gugak is Korea’s only museum specialized in Gugak. What is Gugak? It is traditional Korean music.

Opened in 1995, the Museum of Gugak has become an active educational center. It offers permanent and special exhibitions. These exhibitions delve into in-depth topics. In 2011, the museum underwent a remodeling. This revamp commemorated the 60th anniversary of the National Gugak Center. It reopened in August 2012, boasting six exhibit halls. These halls showcase seven different themes.

Inside, you will find various Gugak instruments. There are also over 250 Gugak-related audio and video archives. You can even experience 3D visual image screens and animations. The Museum of Gugak allows you to learn the flow of thousand-year-old Gugak style at a glance.

The National Gugak Center researches the historical relations between Korean and world music. In 2016, it organized an international conference on the music and relics of the Silk Road. This shows the museum’s dedication to preserving and understanding musical heritage.

The museum features approximately 6,000 pieces of Gugak-related materials and relics. These items hold both historical and cultural value. The seven themed permanent exhibition halls present 250 pieces of audio and video clips regarding Gugak. In the 3D room, visitors can enjoy 3D animation at all times. The museum also hosts special exhibitions with unique themes.

The National Gugak Center is the governing body. It was established to preserve and promote traditional Korean performing arts. The center can accommodate every type of traditional performing arts. This includes palace music, court music, and all other genres. Major productions of changgeuk are also performed here. Changgeuk is Korean musical drama. Originally opened in Busan in 1951, the center moved to its current location in Seoul in 1987.

The Museum of Gugak is free. It is open from 9 AM to 6 PM. It is closed on Mondays and New Year’s Day. Here, you can explore folk games and learn traditional musical instruments. Traditional games and musical instruments are available in the outdoor experience area.

Before we move on, consider the museum’s role. It bridges the past and present. It ensures that the sounds of Gugak continue to resonate for generations to come. The Museum of Gugak is more than just a display of artifacts. It is a living, breathing testament to Korea’s rich musical heritage.
