What if walls could talk? The walls of the Neposkvrněného početí Panny Marie in Strašnice could tell a tale of decades of waiting. The Strašnice parish was established in 1929. A committee formed as early as 1924, dedicated to building a church in Staré Strašnice. The parish house was built in 1930, complete with a temporary chapel. The dream of a dedicated church building, however, remained elusive for many years. The Neposkvrněného početí Panny Marie was finally realized between 1992 and 1994, designed by architect Jindřich Synek. The modern architectural style stands in stark contrast to the decades of traditional designs proposed. Imagine the anticipation as the cornerstone, blessed by Pope John Paul II in Bratislava in 1990, finally found its place. The church’s striking pyramid shape, topped with a cross reaching 25 meters high, evokes a sense of a tent. This design intentionally recalls the biblical story of the Israelites’ journey, symbolizing protection and perhaps a metaphorical shelter within Mary’s embrace. The interior of the Neposkvrněného početí Panny Marie is a simple hall. The pews are arranged in a semicircle, focusing attention on the sandstone altar and green glass sanctuary. The ambo, crafted by sculptor Michal Šaršeho, features a natural wood trunk adorned with symbols of the four Evangelists. A stone book with handprints lies open upon it. Two chapels reside within: St. Wolfgang’s baptismal chapel with a rough-hewn sandstone font, and the Chapel of St. Anne. These spaces, along with the hanging wooden crucifix and wall decorations depicting the Stations of the Cross, add layers of meaning to this modern space. The Neposkvrněného početí Panny Marie is a testament to the enduring faith of the Strašnice community, a dream finally fulfilled after decades of waiting.
