“Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink,” grumbled a thirsty traveler in 1561, near the future site of Malostranská vodárenská věž. The following year, the Malostranská vodárenská věž, also known as Petržilkovská věž, arose as a beacon of hope, quenching the thirst of Lesser Town residents. This charming water tower, standing proudly on Petržilkovský Island, is a unique survivor. It’s the only historical water tower on the Vltava River’s left bank. Imagine the scene in 1562: the newly constructed tower, a sturdy 34-meter sentinel against the sky, its seven floors bustling with activity. The Malostranská vodárenská věž served its vital purpose until 1886, drawing water from the Vltava and distributing it to the grateful inhabitants of Lesser Town. Constructed on the site of a former Carthusian mill, the tower stands as a testament to ingenuity. The Malostranská vodárenská věž is a visual delight. Its square base, topped by a pyramidal roof of tiles, creates a pleasing symmetry. Each of the seven floors boasts a window on every side, framed by sturdy stone. The ground floor, partially built with unplastered stone, adds a touch of rustic charm. A string course elegantly separates the first and second floors, adorned with a captivating bossage. The pyramidal roof, crowned with weather vanes and banners on each side, completes the picturesque scene. A later addition, a glass walkway connecting the tower to an adjacent building, hints at the tower’s continued relevance. This modern touch, designed by architect Jindřiška Petříková in the late 20th century, houses administrative offices. Step into the small park by the tower. You can soak in the breathtaking views of the Vltava River and its bustling right bank. The Malostranská vodárenská věž is more than just a beautiful structure. It’s a symbol of resilience. It represents the ingenuity and determination of a community. It sought to provide for its people.
