How about a tale of survival and transformation right here at svatý Jan Křtitel Na Prádle? This church stands as a testament to Prague’s resilience. It has seen floods, served as a laundry and today welcomes worshippers.

Svatý Jan Křtitel Na Prádle. Its history stretches back to 1142. Imagine a small village named Újezd. This church served as its parish. Benedictine nuns sought refuge here during the siege of Prague Castle.

Around 1240, the original Romanesque church was expanded. A new Gothic presbytery was added before 1300. Svatý Jan Křtitel Na Prádle became more prominent. In the 17th century, the interior was renovated in the Renaissance style. Then around 1700, came a Baroque makeover. Perhaps Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer himself oversaw the changes. He possibly designed the oratory and staircase.

But its sacred purpose was not to last. In 1784, Emperor Joseph II’s reforms led to its closure. The building was sold. For years, svatý Jan Křtitel Na Prádle was a laundry and carpet cleaning business. Hence the name “Na Prádle” meaning “at the laundry”. It also served as a storage space. By 1935, it was described as derelict.

Yet, svatý Jan Křtitel Na Prádle was not forgotten. Between 1935 and 1939, it was renovated. It became the parish church of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church.

Even the devastating floods of 2002 could not defeat it. Kampa and Malá Strana were submerged. Svatý Jan Křtitel Na Prádle was damaged. However, the community rallied. After two months, the first service was held under provisional conditions. Within a year, the church was restored.

Notice the simple design of svatý Jan Křtitel Na Prádle. It lacks a tower. The rectangular nave ends in a steep Gothic gable. The original Gothic roof remains. The lower Gothic presbytery is separated by an arch. Inside are remnants of frescoes from around 1350. Crosses in the surrounding pavement mark the location of a former cemetery.

Take a moment to admire the statue outside. It is of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was created by Michal Josef Brokoff in 1715. It once stood on Charles Square.

Svatý Jan Křtitel Na Prádle represents the enduring spirit of Prague. Its walls have witnessed war, secularization and renewal. Today, it stands as a place of worship and a reminder of the past.
