This isn’t just a statue. It’s a portal to Rudolf’s Prague. Emperor Rudolf II transformed Prague into a hub of arts and sciences. He attracted brilliant minds from across Europe. Among them were Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler.
Tycho Brahe arrived first. The Danish astronomer became the emperor’s court astrologer. Soon after, Johannes Kepler joined him. He came from Graz Austria. Kepler became the imperial court mathematician. This appointment allowed him to dedicate his life to science.
Their relationship was complex. Tycho was a flamboyant Dane. Kepler was a more reserved German. Despite their differences, Tycho recognized Kepler’s potential. He believed Kepler could preserve his legacy.
Tycho tasked Kepler with proving his geo-heliocentric theory. This theory was a compromise between observable facts and scripture. It placed the Earth at the center with the sun orbiting it.
But fate intervened. Tycho Brahe died suddenly in 1601. His death was due to a burst bladder after an imperial banquet. Some even suspected poisoning. But a 2010 inquiry confirmed natural causes.
Tycho’s death unexpectedly propelled Kepler forward. Kepler inherited Tycho’s extensive data. This data was incredibly detailed charts of the stars and planets. It proved crucial to Kepler’s later work. Ironically, Tycho’s data led Kepler to dismantle geo-heliocentrism.
Kepler formulated his three laws of planetary motion. These laws revolutionized our understanding of the solar system. Planets orbit the sun in ellipses not circles. Planets move faster when closer to the sun. Planets further from the sun take longer to orbit.
These laws severed the link between astronomy and theology. Kepler gave order to the universe through mathematics. He spent a significant part of his life in Prague.
Not many traces of Kepler remain in Prague. He lived in Karlova Street. A memorial plaque marks his former residence. But this statue provides a tangible connection to their time here. It stands where the two scientists once researched. Here they had their small observatory.
